Govt to seek explanation from Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences over death of 169 infants in 10 months

The government of Karnataka is looking into the deaths of infants at the Belagavi district teaching hospital, with 169 infants stillborn or dying soon after birth in the last 10 months. Doctors have reported various causes for the deaths, including infections, breathing problems, heart ailments, and premature birth. The hospital director denied reports of oxygen supply disruptions and the government is seeking a report to investigate further. Measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future, including providing infrastructural support to the hospital. An inquiry will be ordered, and action will be taken against any negligence found. District officials will seek explanations from doctors in a meeting on November 11 and review the hospital’s functioning.
