Consuming WHO-Recommended Amount Of Sodium Could Prevent Heart And Kidney Diseases In India: Lancet Study

A study by the World Health Organization suggests that following recommended levels of sodium intake could prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths from heart and kidney disease in the next decade. High sodium levels in salt are a major dietary risk factor for health issues. India lacks a national strategy for sodium reduction despite people consuming double the recommended amount. The WHO suggests consuming under two grams of sodium a day. Implementing sodium benchmarks could lead to significant health benefits and cost savings. Several countries have successfully reduced sodium levels in packaged foods to lower overall intake. India’s ‘Eat Right India’ initiative aims to promote healthy eating, including reducing sodium intake. Further research is needed on how adopting sodium targets for packaged foods could impact the population’s overall intake.
