House Speaker Johnson says GOP may try to repeal CHIPS Act, then walks it back

House Speaker Mike Johnson initially suggested that Republicans would try to repeal legislation that supported U.S. production of semiconductor chips, but later clarified that the goal was to streamline it. The CHIPS Act, which poured $54 billion into the semiconductor industry, has been credited with creating jobs and attracting investments. Johnson’s comments drew criticism from Democrats, who accused him and Trump of pursuing an aggressive conservative agenda. Johnson later clarified his stance, saying that there were no plans to repeal the CHIPS Act, but instead to improve it by eliminating regulations and Green New Deal requirements. The incident highlighted Johnson’s challenges in working with Trump while campaigning for House colleagues. Democrats seized on the comments to emphasize their commitment to creating jobs and supporting manufacturing.
