Two mathematicians from Australia have debunked the popular Infinite Monkey Theorem, which posits that given enough time, a monkey could randomly type out the works of Shakespeare. They argue that even with generous assumptions about typing efficiency and time limits, the chances of this happening are close to zero. The study, published in a peer-reviewed journal, uses the theory of the universe’s eventual “heat death” as a limiting factor. Other mathematicians have pointed out that this theory is well-known in the mathematical community and not really in need of debunking. Even the most intelligent apes, like gorillas, would likely not be able to produce Shakespeare’s works given a keyboard.
