California and Nevada voters consider ending inmate ‘slavery’

California and Nevada voters are considering amendments to their state constitutions to eliminate legal loopholes that allow slavery and involuntary servitude as criminal punishment. If passed, inmates would no longer be forced to work for less than $1 an hour and would have the option to participate in rehabilitation programs. The movement started in Colorado in 2018, with other states like Utah and Nebraska following suit. The initiative in California, Prop. 6, aims to treat incarcerated individuals with respect and compassion, giving them the choice to participate in meaningful work without fear of punishment. Despite facing challenges, proponents are determined to continue advocating for this change in the future if necessary.
