Former Bolivian President Evo Morales claims his car was fired upon in attempted assassination

Former President Evo Morales of Bolivia claimed that he survived an assassination attempt when unidentified men fired shots at his car in the coca leaf-growing region of Chapare. Morales, who led Bolivia from 2006 to 2019, accused his successor President Luis Arce of being behind the attack as they compete to be the candidate of the governing party in the next presidential election. The incident deepens political tensions in Bolivia amid economic struggles and ongoing clashes between Morales’ supporters and the government. Morales also faces accusations of statutory rape, which he denies, and has been holed up in Chapare with the support of coca growers.
