Japan’s ruling party braces for a blow in parliamentary elections

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s conservative ruling party faced a potential loss in the lower house of parliament elections due to public anger over financial scandals and dissatisfaction with the economy. Exit polls indicated that Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party was likely to lose its majority, and it was uncertain if the ruling coalition with Komeito could retain power. Ishiba, who took office in October, apologized for mishandling funds and pledged to restart the party with honesty and fairness. The main opposition party, led by Yoshihiko Noda, was expected to make gains. Analysts suggested that Ishiba needed bold reforms to regain public trust. The LDP’s ability to move on from the legacy of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was also being tested. There were speculations about potential new partners for the LDP, but the party’s future remained uncertain.
