Cincinnati Zoo worker loses part of thumb after primate bite

A worker at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden had their thumb partially amputated after being attacked by a bonobo during morning feeding. The employee is stable in the hospital. The bonobo bit through a mesh barrier while the worker was giving food and medicine. The incident happened behind the scenes and no other staff, guests, or animals were involved. The Jungle Trails habitat was closed for the day but set to reopen the next day. Bonobos are endangered primates closely related to chimpanzees and share 98.7% of their DNA with humans. Researchers hope to learn more about humans from studying bonobos.
