Across rural communities and industrial towns in western Michigan, food banks are struggling to keep up with the increasing demand for groceries. The need for food assistance has surged by 18% in the past year, surpassing even the levels seen during the peak of the pandemic. Rising costs for essentials like food, housing, and utilities are taking a toll on households, leaving many families with little money left over for food. Despite efforts by food banks to meet the demand, they are facing challenges in securing enough food to distribute to those in need. As a result, many people are left waiting in line for hours, only to receive a limited amount of food or be turned away altogether.
