China says disengagement of troops going on ‘smoothly’ in eastern Ladakh

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met during the BRICS summit in Russia and endorsed an agreement on patrolling and disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Both countries have confirmed that troops are being pulled back from friction points, with the process expected to be completed by the end of October. Talks are ongoing for other areas of contention. This agreement comes after tensions escalated in 2020 following a clash in the Galwan Valley. The agreement is seen as a positive step towards resolving issues between the two nations.
