‘Mathilukal’ gifted me a bond with Basheer, says Adoor



Filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan opened a museum and reading room named ‘Mathilukal’ in memory of writer Vaikom Muhammed Basheer at the Dayapuram Educational and Cultural Centre in Kozhikode. Gopalakrishnan had a deep personal bond with Basheer and received numerous accolades for his movie based on Basheer’s short story. Basheer was known for his perfectionism and dedication to his craft, spending years refining his work. The museum displays manuscripts and letters of the writer, curated by academic N.P. Ashley. Actor Mammootty, who played Basheer in the film, considered it an honor. Basheer’s stories, like ‘Bhoomiyude Avakasikal’, conveyed profound ideas in simple terms.
