Loneliness increases risk of dementia by over 30 per cent, review of studies suggests – Times of India

Loneliness has been found to be a major risk factor for dementia, increasing the risk by over 30%. This feeling of dissatisfaction with social relationships can also be linked to symptoms preceding a dementia diagnosis, such as cognitive decline. While loneliness itself may not directly cause dementia, it is still considered a risk factor for overall ill-health. Studies have shown that aspects of psychological well-being, such as lacking purpose in life, can decline years before a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment. Loneliness was found to increase the overall risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and cognitive impairment. The findings suggest that addressing sources of loneliness can support the well-being and cognitive health of aging adults. Future research should also include data from low-income countries where cases of aging-related conditions are on the rise.
