Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had to cancel his trip to Russia for the Brics summit due to a recent head injury that resulted in a minor brain hemorrhage. Medical professionals advised him against long-haul flights, so he will participate in the summit via videoconference instead. Despite the injury, Lula is reported to be doing well and can continue with his normal activities. In his absence, the Brazilian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira at the summit, where leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and other partner nations will convene. This missed opportunity will delay Lula’s first face-to-face discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin this year.
