Hurricane Oscar makes landfall in Cuba as a Category 1 storm

Hurricane Oscar made landfall on the northern coast of east Cuba, near the city of Baracoa, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. The compact but powerful Category 1 storm formed off the coast of the Bahamas and is expected to move across eastern Cuba and the central Bahamas. Cuba was already dealing with power outages following grid failures, and storm warnings and watches were in place. Heavy rainfall and storm surge are expected in eastern Cuba, the southeastern Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos. The hurricane is expected to weaken after landfall but could still be a tropical storm as it moves northeastward.
