Dharavi potters’ ‘Make in India’ creed at risk of Maharashtra’s ‘slum redevelopment’ screed | Mumbai News



The potters of Kumbharwada in Mumbai have been making earthen pots for generations, sourcing clay from far away due to urbanization. Most of them are of Gujarati descent, originally from Saurashtra, now speaking mainly Marathi. Despite the challenges, they remain optimistic, proud to continue the tradition of ‘Make in India’. However, the looming redevelopment of Dharavi raises concerns about their future and livelihood. The artisans are worried about displacement and hope for direct communication with the government to discuss the uncertain future of their business.
