Three young women in Kerala have been recruited as crew members for Kochi Water Metro ferries, breaking gender stereotypes in the water transport sector. Arunima, Lakshmi, and Sneha are undergoing training to eventually pilot the electric-hybrid ferries. With backgrounds in engineering, they are eager to learn and excel in their roles. The Kochi Water Metro Ltd. is encouraging more women to join as boat crew, promoting women empowerment and showcasing their capabilities in traditionally male-dominated fields. The women’s training will also contribute to the green transition in India’s inland water transport sector. Their dedication and skills are proving that they are equal, if not better, than their male counterparts. India’s first lady Merchant Navy Officer, Capt. Radhika Menon, has agreed to support the campaign to recruit more women crew members for Water Metro ferries.
