Death risk found to rise due to adverse effects on health in wake of extreme rainfall events – Times of India



A recent study found that extreme rainfall events can increase the risk of death, particularly from heart and lung conditions. As climate change leads to more frequent and intense rainfall, there is growing evidence of the negative impact on health, including the spread of infectious diseases. Researchers analyzed data from over 62,000 rainfall events worldwide and found a significant increase in deaths following extreme weather. Daily rainfall intensity was linked to higher risks of cardiovascular and respiratory mortality. While the study had limitations and could not establish causation, it emphasized the importance of public health strategies to address the health effects of extreme rainfall.
