The 82-year-old nuclear survivor Kido Suechi of Japan’s Nihon Hidankyo organization spoke at the 2022 Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons, highlighting the organization’s efforts to create a world free of nuclear weapons. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Nihon Hidankyo’s grassroots movement with the Nobel Peace Prize for raising awareness about the devastating consequences of nuclear weapons. Despite the progress made in stigmatizing the use of nuclear weapons, the committee expressed concern about the current pressure on the taboo against their use. The committee plans to contact Nihon Hidankyo soon and the presentation of the Nobel Prizes will take place in Oslo on Dec. 10. Additionally, Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her advocacy for women’s rights and human rights in Iran.
