The Federation for Retail Traders Welfare Association (FRTWA) is against the BMC classifying illuminated shop name boards as advertising. The FRTWA president, Viren Shah, argues that once a name board is illuminated with neon lights for visibility at night, it should not suddenly be considered an advertisement. The BMC officials, however, maintain that they are just following the law and shopkeepers can approach them for permission to have illuminated boards by paying a fee. The FRTWA is threatening to oppose the government and call for a retail bandh if the harassment of shopkeepers continues.
