The Ameenabad harbour off the Uppada coast is nearly complete and expected to be commissioned by December 2024. The construction, funded by the Centre, is 70% complete with only the dredging portion remaining. Despite concerns from fisherfolk, all clearances have been obtained and the design approved by IIT-Madras. Currently, Uppada fisherfolk are anchoring their boats at the harbour during natural disasters, although seawater entry has been an issue. Once completed, the harbour will support the handling of 1.10 lakh tonnes of fish per year, providing a much-needed facility for mechanised boats operating off the Uppada coast.
