Tourist dies after losing her leg in shark attack while sailing off Canary Islands

Shark attacks are rare, with only 69 confirmed unprovoked attacks worldwide and 14 fatalities reported last year. Australia had a disproportionate number of deaths from shark bites in 2023, accounting for 22% of the world’s unprovoked shark attacks. The recent attack in Spain, where a German tourist lost her life after being bitten by a shark while sailing, is a tragic reminder of the dangers these animals can pose. Other recent incidents include a shark attack in Jamaica that killed a high school student and a surfer losing his leg in Australia. While shark attacks are uncommon, they can be deadly when they do occur.
