India seeks to amend Indus Water Treaty, sends formal notice to Pakistan | India News



India has formally notified Pakistan of its intention to review and modify the Indus Water Treaty due to fundamental and unforeseen changes in circumstances. The notice calls for government-to-government negotiations under Article XII(3) of the agreement. India emphasizes the need for talks, citing global changes since the Treaty was signed in 1960, its reliance on hydropower for clean energy goals, and ongoing disputes over hydroelectric projects. The Treaty governs the distribution of water from six rivers, with India having unrestricted use of the eastern rivers and the right to generate hydroelectric power on the western rivers.
