The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has taken action against a fishmeal processor in Karnataka for engaging in unsustainable and illegal exports. The authority cancelled the processor’s registration certificate in accordance with MPEDA Rules 1972. The move was welcomed by the Indian Marine Ingredients Association, who emphasized the importance of responsible practices in the fishmeal industry. The industry supports fishermen by processing low-value and discarded catch from trawlers. Conflict between traditional fishermen and those engaging in unsustainable practices has led to tensions along the coast of Kerala, prompting authorities to intervene for a more peaceful resolution.
