CMFRI unit designated seaweed research centre of excellence

The Department of Fisheries has designated the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute as a centre of excellence for seaweed cultivation. The centre in Tamil Nadu will focus on research, training, and capacity building to promote sustainable seaweed farming practices. The goal is to enhance India’s role in the global seaweed industry. The centre will work on improving cultivation techniques, establish a seed bank for genetic diversity, conduct environmental impact assessments, and offer training programs for farmers and entrepreneurs. International collaboration will also be a focus to facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building. Seaweed farming is seen as a promising opportunity for economic growth, coastal livelihood, and environmental conservation.
