The BBMP in Bengaluru is launching a special healthcare programme for pourakarmikas, including cancer screenings for the first time. Previously, these workers only had access to basic checkups for blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol. The new programme will also address occupational health concerns such as back strain, joint pain, and exposure to dust and sunlight. The expanded health tests will include screenings for various conditions and vital organs, as well as cancer screenings. BBMP will provide necessary medications and monitor the workers’ health regularly. The services will now be available at general hospitals and medical colleges, making it more convenient for the workers. Pourakarmikas and their association are enthusiastic about this initiative, as it will help address their health concerns and provide much-needed preventive care.
