Nine people, including the national police director, high-ranking police officials, and a fugitive banker, were killed in a military helicopter crash in El Salvador. The crash happened after the banker, Manuel Coto, was captured in Honduras and handed over to Salvadoran authorities. Coto was involved in embezzlement and was arrested while trying to flee to the US. President Nayib Bukele called for a thorough investigation into the crash and ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honor of the victims. Despite criticism from rights groups, Bukele’s crackdown on gangs has brought down the country’s homicide rate, making El Salvador safer.
