Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is seeking an urgent hearing in the Supreme Court regarding a defamation case against him over his alleged remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Delhi High Court had refused to quash the proceedings, stating that the remarks defamed the Prime Minister and the ruling BJP. Tharoor’s lawyer requested the case be heard on September 10 to avoid him having to appear in the trial court the same day. The Chief Justice agreed to look into the matter. Tharoor’s petition for quashing the defamation proceedings was dismissed by the High Court, citing sufficient material for summoning him under the Indian Penal Code.
